ZOLA brow dye comes in two types. Eyebrow Tint with collagen is mixed with 3% developer, while Tattoo Tint works without developer. The Colouring System set gives five shades of collagen dye and 3% developer in one pack.

For lashes, ZOLA offers the 06 Blue Black shade with 1.8% developer, and Tattoo Tint. The 4% and 6% developers are intended for use with the CLEAR TONE lightening cream. Eyebrow Tint dyes are marked as a product for professional use only.

ZOLA brow dye: Eyebrow Tint, Tattoo Tint and Colouring System, what is the difference

The ZOLA lines differ in two things: whether a developer is needed and what comes in the pack. The table shows both.

Eyebrow Tint also differs from Tattoo Tint in composition. Eyebrow Tint dye contains collagen, lanolin and sorbitol and has a lamellar texture that leaves an imprint with a henna effect on the skin. In Tattoo Tint the colorant is fixed on the skin by substrate molecules, and the formula has a physiological pH of 5.5.

All dyes and developers are collected in the “Brow and lash tinting” section. The rest of the brand's range can be browsed on the ZOLA page.

ZOLA brow shades: from Light Brown to Graphite

A ZOLA dye shade is chosen by the color of the hairs and the client's undertone. 01 Light Brown does not darken the hair of blondes and light blondes; on a warm undertone it looks warmer, on a cool one cooler. 02 Warm Brown is a rich copper-brown and suits redheads and warm-toned brown-haired women.

03 Brown is a neutral brown: it takes firmly on the skin and suits everyone from dark blondes to brown-haired women, black-haired women and redheads. 04 Dark Brown with a neutral base suits black-haired women, brown-haired women and dark blondes.

05 Graphite is a cool graphite shade. It is taken on its own or as a corrector, because added to brown shades it makes them cooler. The blue-black 06 Blue Black is intended for lashes.

The 07 Tint Mixer base is mixed with the dye, and only then is the developer added. Tattoo Tint has four base shades: Black, Brown, Light Brown and Dark Grey. They can be mixed with each other to make a custom color.

Sachet set or 15 ml bottle: what a specialist should choose

The format of ZOLA dye is chosen by the number of shades in use and by whether a developer is at hand. Four typical situations:

  • One constant shade: a 15 ml Eyebrow Tint bottle and 3% developer separately.
  • A shade is needed rarely: Eyebrow Tint in a 5 ml sachet.
  • A range of shades and developer at once: the Colouring System set.
  • Both brows and lashes without developer: Tattoo Tint.

Tattoo Tint is sold as a 15 ml bottle of one shade or as a set of four. The set makes sense if the colors are mixed with each other.

Unopened ZOLA dye and developer have a shelf life of 36 months. ZOLA advises using an opened Eyebrow Tint bottle within three months, so a rarely used shade is easier to take in a sachet.

ZOLA brow developer: 1.8%, 3%, 4% or 6%

Eyebrow Tint dye is paired with 3% developer for brows and 1.8% developer for lashes. ZOLA designed them for its own dye and advises using them as a pair. The dye descriptions name only these two developers.

The choice of developer depends on what exactly is being done to the brows or lashes:

  • Tinting brows with Eyebrow Tint: 3% developer.
  • Tinting lashes with the 06 Blue Black shade: 1.8% developer.
  • Lightening brows with CLEAR TONE cream: 4% developer for gentle, controlled lightening, 6% for deeper lightening.
  • Tinting with Tattoo Tint: no developer is added.

Developer for ZOLA tint. What to use for brows, lashes and lightening: Eyebrow Tint (brows): developer 3%; 06 Blue Black (lashes): developer 1,8%; Tattoo Tint (brows and lashes): no developer; CLEAR TONE (brow lightening): developer 4% / 6%, 4% gentle lightening, 6% deeper. How long to leave it on: Eyebrow Tint 5-15 min, Tattoo Tint 1-5 min. Count the time from the start of application.

The 4% and 6% developers are mixed with CLEAR TONE cream at a 1:1 ratio to a uniform creamy consistency.

How to use brow dye: step-by-step instructions

Tinting with ZOLA Eyebrow Tint takes six steps, and the developer is added at the third.

  1. Clean the brows of makeup and skin oil with ZOLA foam.
  2. Outline the contour with a pencil, Brow Paste or a mapping thread.
  3. In a non-metal container, mix the dye with the developer at 1:1, about 1 cm of each, until uniform.
  4. Apply the mixture evenly along the contour, without going beyond it.
  5. Leave it for the required time, counting from the start of application.
  6. Remove the dye with a cotton pad moistened with warm water.

Do an allergy test before the work and keep the mixture out of the eyes.

Tattoo Tint is applied without developer. Clean the skin, outline the shape, apply a thin layer to the brows or lashes and remove the residue with a pad moistened with water.

Dye residue on the skin after tinting is removed by the ZOLA Skin Color Remover. It is applied to a cotton pad and the skin is wiped in circular motions, then rinsed with warm water or ZOLA foam.

If tinting follows lamination, ZOLA recommends ZOLA dye for the Color Lab Classic System set. The article on ZOLA brow and lash lamination covers the lamination sets.

How long to leave dye on the brows and how to count the time

ZOLA Eyebrow Tint is left on the brows for 5 to 15 minutes, Tattoo Tint for 1 to 5 minutes.

The exact time depends on the desired shade or intensity. The count starts from the moment the mixture is applied to the hairs.

If the Tint Mixer base is added to the dye, the mixture is left for up to 15 minutes. For a richer color, ZOLA advises applying a second thin layer of Tattoo Tint. How long the color lasts depends on the condition of the hairs and aftercare.

Dye or henna for brows from ZOLA: which to choose

ZOLA dye needs a developer, while ZOLA henna is diluted with water 1:1 to the consistency of soy sauce. Henna is left on the brows until completely dry, usually 20-40 minutes.

Henna is not used for lashes: ZOLA tints them with the 06 Blue Black shade or Tattoo Tint. The choice between henna and dye is covered in detail in the “Brow henna” section.
